DAMN, FRANK !!!

I got 306, 108 of it on box jumps.

A couple observations ... if going for total score, starting on box jumps helps. I can see that being the biggest gap (for me) between starting fresh and starting tired. If scoring lowest round, it would be push press, at least for me. I think I got a 4, maybe even a 3.

Today was the first time I could spring immediately off the floor continuously on box jumps. Hours of jumping rope seem to be helping. I'm sure the 20" box didn't hurt, either.

Thanks for one of the best 20 minute workouts I've ever had!! As exhausted as I am, it's hard to believe that a full third of the workout was resting.

Before yesterday's Eastern European tour, Frank prohpetically commented that this week's MetCons will be hell. To borrow again from Weir and Barlow, "I may be going to hell in a [box] babe, but [I'm darn sure] enjoying the ride." Copyright Ice Nine Publishing.

Mike -

I secured permission from my gym's head trainer to spend the first few days in camp next time we're preparing a guy for a fight. I will try in introduce Fight Gone Bad, Fight Gone Tabata, etc. in place of running (even interval running). He still believes jogging (often in a sweat suit) is essential for dropping weight and "keeping everything tight". You and I think that is cr@p. I have read that LSD (Long Slow Distance) is not an efficient fat burner. I will look for good research on that (of course LSD - Lysergic acid diethylamide - made me the man I am today, but that's not the point here).

Although my guy insists on the importance of jogging, he understands that it does not replicate anything actually done in a fight, and he uses boxing as the primary training for boxing ... sparring, mitts, heavy bag, etc.

I will have plenty of warning before having to show up in camp and appear to know my sh!t. I would be interested in anyone's input on the value of replacing jogging with some serious MetCon.

Mike, Yann, Katrina, Ben, anyone ???

Because Wysong can't do them.

I can do one in a row....every five minutes....about the same amount of time it takes Red to run to the end of the driveway and back

Mike,

Why didn't someone tell me that long distance running, aka endurance, is "cr@p?" This fits so perfectly into my worldview. I'm kinda p!ssed you didn't tell me before. I'm going to work on my "fat burning" by benching. See you later.

Unhappily yours,
Red

Wacko Assassin, train away on handstand pushups. FWIW, I'd practice them at home with a bunch of pillows to cushion your landing. If you land on your head and snap your neck, your wife can call the ambulance for you, or drive you to the doctor. Please don't do them on the concrete floor of the gym. Even though I suspect your skull is likely as hard/harder than that, I don't want to have to leave the gym in the middle of the wod to get you medical attention. Keep us posted on your progress.

Wacko, I don't know who you are or what camp you mean but my understanding is that maintaing the ability to jog for atleast an hour is important for an athlete, fighter or NASCAR racer, being able to jog with ease and maintaining your hips knees and ankle strength will help you be better at the sport youre specializing in. If you look at 90% of Olympic sports, fighting included that athlete is going to have jogging in his routine atleast a little bit per week. From my opinion running will also work to keep the core tight. Not ones inns have rock hard abs from they're morning jog but if you up your mileage you start to feel sore in all kinds of areas that you wouldn't expect. I sometimes think of fitness as the ultimate sandwich, were jogging might be the lettuce. You don't want to eat a plain lettuce sandwich, but then again the sandwich is incomplete with out a little lettuce.

That being said if your guy is he'll bent on the idea that jogging is going to win him a fight he's probably way off.... Mike tells me the shit you do is the shit you get good at. Id say from what you wrote that this guy is comfortable in his ways and doesn't like his buttons pushed, it's pretty easy to see fr crossfit that pushing your buttons and doing the shit that you don't want to do, the wods that you know you suck at is the key to success. My final advice is, don't eliminate the jogging but it shouldn't be the focus of the fight prep!

Um...facsimile that.
July 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRed
red,
will you explain to me what that means?
July 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkatrina
Thanks, Mike. I suspected saftey was the issue with handstand pushups. They're cool for showing off, but we do other hands above head stuff. I followed Trent's reference to the WOD on CrossFit.com. 84 handstand pushups does seem kinda silly to me. I tried one and banged my head on the wall on the dismount.

Thank you for considering our safety as well as our development. I assume the waivers are pretty air tight.

Wacko Assassin, I would think some sort of Tabata routine would mimic a boxing match, as it is a mix of fighting and rest.
Perhaps something similar to today's WOD but pick more fight specific exercises like jump rope, pushups, plank or something like that???

Katrina,

I didn't think I was allowed to type fuck anymore. So I replaced it with other words that start with F. I thought facsimile was a good choice, because it means exact replica.

I do want to point out that according to the MPAA, you can say the f-word exactly one time before you get an R rating as long as it does not describe a sexual act. To the best of my recollection, I've never used it in that fashion on the blog. So technically speaking, if i use the word once per day, it's still PG-13.

Keeping it classy,
Red
